Luis Suarez's long-awaited return from suspension could not inspire Liverpool to victory over Tottenham at Anfield.

The Uruguay international, having served an eight-match suspension for racially abusing Manchester United's Patrice Evra, had not played since St Stephen's Day.

The striker came on as a substitute and made up for lost time with an energetic performance in the second half.

After leader Manchester City moved eight points clear of third-place Tottenham by beating Fulham on Sunday, Spurs needed to win at Anfield to stay in touch.

But without manager Harry Redknapp, who was stranded in London due to aircraft difficulties, Tottenham failed to find its usual fluency and lacked a decent share of possession or territory.

With the game drifting towards a stalemate, Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish introduced Suarez. It did not take long for the striker to get booked after leaving Scott Parker in a heap while challenging inside the Tottenham penalty box.

Liverpool looked the more likely to score in the closing stages. Carroll spurned a fine chance in the 74th minute when, unmarked, he blazed over the bar from a good position.

It was an eighth draw in 12 league matches at Anfield for Liverpool this season. Spurs are seven points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City.
